What Is Genioplasty (Chin Surgery)?

Genioplasty is a chin surgery that repositions the chin bone to correct a chin that is too weak, too prominent, or out of balance with the rest of the face. Dr. Morrissette makes the incision inside the mouth, so there is no visible scar on the skin.

He moves a segment of the chin bone into its new position and secures it with a small titanium plate. Because the surgery works with your own bone, the result looks and feels natural.

Genioplasty vs. Chin Implants: What Is the Difference?

Both procedures reshape the chin, but they work differently. Genioplasty moves your natural bone, while a chin implant places a silicone implant over it.

Genioplasty can lengthen, shorten, advance, or narrow the chin, giving Dr. Morrissette more control over the final shape. Chin implants mainly add projection. He will explain which option fits your anatomy during your consultation, and he also offers facial implants when that is the better route. See real patient genioplasty results.

Types of Chin Reshaping Dr. Morrissette Performs

Dr. Morrissette performs several kinds of chin reshaping, which lets him tailor the surgery to each face. The right move depends on your profile and proportions.

Chin Advancement

For a weak or receding chin, chin advancement moves the bone forward. This increases lower facial height and creates a stronger, more balanced profile.

Chin Reduction

For an overly prominent chin, chin reduction removes a segment of bone to set it back. Segment removal gives a permanent result and preserves the natural contour, unlike bone shaving, which the body tends to regrow over time.

Chin Narrowing and Jawline Surgery

Dr. Morrissette can also narrow a wide chin and refine the jawline. This jawline surgery softens or strengthens the lower face depending on the look you want.

In-Office Genioplasty Under Sedation

One thing sets Dr. Morrissette apart: he performs genioplasty in-office under sedation, and he believes he may be one of the only surgeons in the country offering chin surgery this way.

This means your procedure takes place in a comfortable, accredited setting rather than a hospital. His outpatient surgery center is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Health Care, one of only four agencies approved by the California Medical Board.

Dr. Morrissette’s Unique Approach to Genioplasty

  • Extensive Jaw & Bone Expertise: His background in oral, maxillofacial, and facial cosmetic surgery provides him with a profound understanding of facial bone structure, jaw alignment, and natural aesthetic balance.
  • National Authority & Educator: A true specialist in structural facial surgery, Dr. Morrissette teaches advanced facial implant techniques to other surgeons through specialized cadaver labs in Las Vegas.
  • A Destination for Facial Sculpting: Patients routinely travel from across the country specifically for his expertise in complex chin reshaping, facial feminization surgery (chin and jawline reduction), and custom implants—including chin, cheek, and temporal augmentations.
  • Complete Reshaping Versatility: Every procedure is fully customized. Dr. Morrissette can advance a recessed chin, set back a prominent one, narrow the lower face, or completely taper the jawline to match your ideal profile.

Am I a Candidate for Genioplasty?

Good candidates are healthy, free of conditions that impair healing, and clear about the change they want. A weak, prominent, or uneven chin is the most common reason patients come in.

You may be a candidate if you:

  • Have a receding or overly prominent chin
  • Want a more balanced profile
  • Feel your chin makes your nose look larger
  • Are in good general health with realistic expectations

Genioplasty may not be right for you if:

  • You are still growing, have an uncontrolled medical condition, will not quit smoking, or your real concern is your bite.

Genioplasty Recovery Timeline: What to Expect

The genioplasty recovery timeline spans about six weeks for firm bone healing, and optimal results can take six months or more to appear.

  • Day of surgery: Most patients eat a normal diet beginning that night. Softer foods often feel more comfortable for the first few days while the lip is swollen and numb.
  • Days 1–3: Swelling peaks on the second or third day typically. Rest with your head elevated and use cold compresses. Expect a deep ache and pressure, which are controlled by prescribed medication.
  • Days 4–7: Swelling and bruising ease, and the self-dissolving sutures begin to break down. Rinse gently after meals to keep the incision clean. Most patients return to work in about a week.
  • Weeks 2–3: Most visible puffiness settles within about two weeks. Walking and light activity are fine.
  • Weeks 4–6: Strenuous exercise is generally avoided for at least four to six weeks. Dr. Morrissette clears heavy lifting and contact sports once the bone has healed.
  • Months 3–6: Residual swelling under the chin resolves, and your final profile becomes clear. Deep swelling can take months to fully resolve.

Lower lip and chin numbness is common early on. Sensation returns gradually over weeks or months, sometimes with tingling that signals nerve recovery. Recovery runs longer when chin surgery is combined with a neck lift or facial liposuction. Review Dr. Morrissette’s pre- and post-operative instructions before surgery.

How Much Does Genioplasty Cost?

Cost depends on your anatomy and the type of chin surgery you need. A chin advancement, a chin reduction, and a chin implant each carry different pricing.

The length and complexity of your procedure also factor in. Dr. Morrissette provides a clear estimate at your consultation, and financing is available.

Why Choose Dr. Morrissette for Genioplasty in Ventura?

Dr. Morrissette is board-certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery, with decades of work in facial bone and jaw surgery. That background makes the chin a natural focus of his practice.

Patients have traveled from outside the area specifically for his chin procedures. If a chin needs correction after a previous surgery, he also performs chin revision, and chin reshaping is a core part of his facial feminization surgery.

Genioplasty FAQs

How long does genioplasty surgery take?

Genioplasty surgery itself usually takes about an hour. In one published series of advancement genioplasties, incision-to-closure time averaged 51 minutes. Adding procedures such as a neck lift or facial liposuction lengthens the visit. Dr. Morrissette performs chin surgery in-office under sedation, so you go home the same day.

Is genioplasty painful?

Genioplasty is not painful during surgery because you are sedated and the area is numbed. Afterward, most patients describe a deep ache and pressure that peaks in the first few days and eases steadily. Lip and chin numbness often dulls sensation further. Prescribed medication controls discomfort, and Dr. Morrissette's pre- and post-operative instructions explain how to manage the first week.

Are genioplasty results permanent?

Yes, genioplasty results are permanent because the chin bone heals in its new position. A study of advancement genioplasty with rigid plate fixation found average bone movement of less than half a millimeter after 12 months. Normal aging and weight changes still affect the soft tissue around the chin over time. See real patient outcomes in the chin surgery before and after gallery.

What is the ideal age or skeletal maturity for genioplasty?

The ideal time for genioplasty is after jaw growth is complete, generally in the late teens. Dr. Morrissette confirms skeletal maturity during your consultation. There is no firm upper age limit, and healthy adults of many ages have chin surgery. General health and healing ability matter more than age. You can schedule a consultation to find out if the timing is right for you.

Is chin surgery good for men?

Yes, chin surgery works well for men. A stronger or better-proportioned chin improves jawline definition and facial balance while keeping a masculine look. In a 126-patient advancement genioplasty series published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, 81 patients were men. Dr. Morrissette tailors the movement to your profile and can pair chin surgery with facial liposuction to sharpen the jawline.

Can genioplasty change how large my nose looks?

Yes, genioplasty can make a nose look smaller without changing the nose itself. A weak chin makes the nose appear more prominent. Moving the chin forward restores balance between the two features. If the nose shape is your main concern, that requires a separate procedure. Dr. Morrissette evaluates your whole profile at your consultation.

Who is not a good candidate for genioplasty?

Patients who are still growing, have uncontrolled medical conditions, smoke, or have a bite problem are not good candidates for genioplasty. Chin surgery should wait until jaw growth is complete, and conditions like poorly controlled diabetes need to be stable first. Smoking raises the risk of infection and slow bone healing, so follow the pre-operative instructions on quitting. A bite problem needs orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery, because genioplasty changes the chin, not how the teeth meet.

What are the risks of genioplasty?

The risks of genioplasty include infection, hardware problems, lip or chin numbness, asymmetry, and the possible need for revision. Serious complications are uncommon. In a published series of 126 advancement genioplasty patients, the overall complication rate was 6.3%. Infection occurred in 1.6% of patients, and plate extrusion occurred in 1.6%. Temporary numbness is the most common issue, reported in roughly 2% to 10% of isolated chin surgeries, and it usually resolves over weeks to months. Revision is uncommon, with one cohort reporting a rate under 1%, and Dr. Morrissette also performs chin revision when a correction is needed. These figures come from published studies, not Dr. Morrissette's own patient data. Call the office right away for fever, worsening pain or swelling after day four, or drainage from the incision.
